We are proud to share that our Nakoosa Trail Fleet/Fire/Radio Shop Facility project was honored with the ENR Midwest Award of Merit in Sustainability. In 2022 this project was also given ACEC-Wisconsin’s 2022 Engineering Excellence Best of State Award.
Mead & Hunt provided structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection engineering, along with technology and security systems design on this project, providing the city of Madison with a much-needed new fleet/fire/radio shop facility. The new 110,000-square-foot combines four facilities into one, and the building serves as headquarters for the city’s Fleet Services division.
This project has been recognized for prioritizing sustainability and energy-efficiency, earning a Leadership in Energy and Environmental design (LEED) Gold certification after its completion in May 2022. The building incorporated a 100kW photovoltaic system, solar hot water heating, radiant floors throughout, a passive heat solar wall, LED lighting in conjunction with dimmable daylight harvesting, and electric vehicle charging stations. These elements drastically cut down on energy usage and improve the work environment, the city is seeing savings of $300,000 to $400,000 each year in utility and operating costs.
This project marks a significant milestone for the city of Madison as it aims to reach its goal of 100% renewable energy and zero net carbon emissions by 2030. It also equips the city to meet future needs and demands. Congratulations to all involved!
