General Mitchell Air National Guard Base needed their main gate complex area to meet current Unified Facilities Criteria and Antiterrorism/Force Protection requirements and incorporate a commercial inspection area. Mead & Hunt concurrently designed a new gate house and road, commercial vehicle inspection facility, and perimeter fencing.
Since the project site is in a 100-year floodplain area, the design raised all foundations and roads and carefully placed each pipe network to keep the area dry. The site also contained problematic soils. To save money, we worked with the base to incorporate material saved from previous projects to raise the grades.
Building design features included split face masonry block, standing seam metal roof, light gauge metal truss framing and a steel truss framed canopy. We also completed various site improvements including a new parking lot, as well as roadway and drainage design.
