We’re excited to share that Mead & Hunt was recently awarded an Engineering Excellence Honor Award from ACEC/MD for our work on the Traffic Signal Timing Operations project alongside the Balitmore City Department of Transportation in Baltimore, MD.
Our team designed, field implemented, and fine-tuned traffic signal timings at 410 intersections in South Baltimore and the Central Business District. The previous communication system was a 1970s copper-based system that utilized outdated software that was incompatible with current computer operating systems. Because of that, the system didn’t allow for remote monitoring and management, which caused the controller clock for each signal to suffer from erratic “drift.”

With Mead & Hunt’s aid, the city was able to retime traffic signals, implement Vulnerable Road User (VRU) safety measures, address community complaints, and add technologies to address system maintenance issues. Specifically, a cloud-based mini Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) with rental cellular communications was deployed by the team, which allows staff to remotely manage and monitor capabilities such as synchronizing clocks to eliminate any drift in the signals.
This project was one of the first of its kind in outsourcing Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSMO) to an A/E consultant like Mead & Hunt. Synchronization of traffic signal clocks is crucial for effective traffic signal coordination, and by outsourcing to our team, an innovative solution was found to address a common issue in outdated systems.
The success of this project exemplifies the expertise and dedication of the team and sets a precedent for future innovative approaches in transportation. Congratulations to all involved!
