Mare Island required rehabilitation efforts on a 1934 causeway bridge, which is included in the boundary for the Mare Island Historic District as a contributing resource. Mare Island is also designated as a National Historic Landmark.
Mead & Hunt completed a Programmatic Section 4(f) evaluation for Caltrans District 4. As established by the Programmatic Section 4(f) Evaluation for Historic Bridges, a limited number of avoidance alternatives must be evaluated and rejected before the FHWA can approve an action that uses a historic bridge. Mead & Hunt prepared a report to present the alternatives analysis for the bridge rehabilitation project to allow Caltrans to assess the alternatives. The final report demonstrating there were no feasible or prudent alternatives for the causeway bridge was submitted and accepted by Caltrans District 4 and FHWA.
