While increasing its cheese production volume, this national cheese producer sought to reduce off-site disposal costs for its high-strength waste (HSW) at its wastewater treatment plant. Our team completed the preliminary design and permitting of the new wastewater treatment system that features a new anaerobic upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) digester and gravity flow to and from the plant. To store biogas for future use, storage was also integrated into the wastewater treatment system. To accelerate the project schedule, the project phased quickly to a design-build approach, and several primary equipment items with long-lead times were purchased early. With our assistance, the project obtained safe harbor standing for an investment tax credit by using the biogas to generate electricity and recover heat. The plant effectively treats HSW and generates power and electricity.
