Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging
Our Differences Make us Stronger
What does diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) mean to Mead & Hunt? From enhancing the sense of belonging within our company, to incorporating equity and inclusion into our project work, to engaging in meaningful community outreach, at Mead & Hunt, it starts and ends with putting people first.
DEIB within our firm
We strive for a culture of inclusion and belonging through listening, sharing, and learning from different experiences. Our Employee Resource Group (ERG) is a key component of our DEIB efforts and plays a pivotal role in creating a strong sense of community. Started in 2018, our ERG collaborates with Corporate Management, the DEIB Program Manager, and our Equity Strategies Market Leader on the company’s goals vision to best support our employees, clients, and communities.
The ERG aims to:
- Make inclusive internal policies that support employees from underrepresented groups
- Maintain a culture where all employees feel safe and valued
- Increase retention, with an emphasis on support for those from underrepresented groups
- Diversify the talent pipeline internally and within the AEC industry through student outreach
Employee Resource Interest Groups
The ERG is composed of several interest groups, which meet regularly and collaborate with other Mead & Hunt committees to strengthen interpersonal relationships, learn from each other, and explore solutions to common problems each group faces within the AEC industry.
These interest groups are not static; new groups are added as we evolve. Our current interest groups include:
- Disabilities and Caregiving Interest Group
- Ethnic Minorities Interest Group
- LGBTQIA+ Interest Group
- Veterans-Military Interest Group
- Women Interest Group
DEIB in our Communities
Our industry and projects need to reflect the diverse communities in which we work and live. Our unique perspectives shape our interactions with our clients and communities, allowing us to create projects that value diverse needs and points of view.
We are committed to increasing diversity, equity, and a sense of belonging within the AEC industry, the communities we serve, and the projects we work on. Measures we have taken include:
- Outreach to youth programs to encourage interest in the industry
- Donating to organizations that support DEIB , such as the National Society of Black Engineers, Conference of Minority Transportation Officials, and National Girls Collaborative Project.
- Providing scholarships to students pursuing degrees in STEM fields, including scholarships specifically for ethnic minorities
- Promoting environmental justice considerations in our project work
- Increasing awareness of social and environmental justice through discussions at industry events and conferences
- Developing resource guides to facilitate research of and engagement with underrepresented groups
- Coordinating with outside specialists, academics, and community leaders to gather project-related data and guidance
- Researching and applying new cultural resource trends and methodologies to counteract the dismissal of underrepresented community history
Our Partners
We know that working together with others in our industry will allow us to have the greatest positive impact. That’s why we are also active in several organizations committed to increasing and enhancing DEIB within the markets we serve.
