Jackson Hole Airport (JAC) is the only commercial service airport located entirely within a national park: Grand Teton National Park. Its unique setting means the airport’s environment plays a significant role in shaping the park users’ experience. Mead & Hunt has partnered with JAC for decades, providing services in environmental and sustainability planning, noise abatement, water quality, compliance reporting, emission reduction, waste diversion, and most recently, assistance with certification under DarkSky’s International Dark Sky Places program.
In 2025, JAC achieved a historic milestone as the world’s first airport certified as an International Dark Sky Place. From pre-application development to the preparation of a lighting inventory, lighting management plan, and educational outreach program, Mead & Hunt served as a trusted advisor, helping JAC develop strategies to reduce light pollution.
By achieving DarkSky certification, JAC hopes to promote responsible outdoor lighting locally and across the aviation industry. Additionally, earning this certification has strengthened local efforts in Teton County, leading it to become the world’s first county certified as an International Dark Sky Community. This achievement further advances efforts to preserve the night sky over northwestern Wyoming.
