Iowa State Penitentiary Historic Structures Report

After being open for more than 176 years, the Iowa State Penitentiary Site was decommissioned in 2015. This left the State to determine what to do with the now-vacant 29 major structures and 55-acre site. We prepared an expanded historic structures report that provided resources to incite action with phasing and cost options of $142 million to $160 million worth of future economic development projects. Utilizing an innovative approach through a robust public engagement process, the expanded report laid the groundwork for development with three masterplan options, financial and market data, and a development vision focused on stakeholder priorities, values, and goals.
