With hundreds of older industrial warehouses and factories in Milwaukee, rehabilitation provides a preservation option with an economic boost for the city. Our team developed a custom and innovative approach to record and evaluate nearly 1,000 industrial buildings in the city according to the National Register of Historic Places Criteria for Evaluation. In addition to properties already recognized, we identified 39 buildings and two historic districts that met the criteria and are candidates to receive tax credits.
Assisting the Wisconsin State Historic Preservation Office, Mead & Hunt’s Cultural Resources team completed intensive-level research, evaluated and recommended these identified industrial properties eligible for listing in the National Register and were able to apply historic preservation tax credits for improvements. Historic preservation tax credits are an important incentive for developers to renovate the buildings for income-producing uses.
