Mead & Hunt served as a subconsultant to Freese & Nichols, providing on-call environmental services to the Houston Airport System (HAS) at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and William P. Hobby Airport (HOU).
Our team supported HAS in the environmental assessment (EA) for the West Concourse Expansion at HOU. The project included six additional domestic gates, one international‑capable gate, associated passenger facilities, apron and taxi lane improvements, utility extensions, and stormwater infrastructure. The EA was completed on an accelerated schedule and received a combined Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) and Record of Decision (ROD). Key environmental considerations included air quality in a severe nonattainment area, greenhouse gas emissions analysis, hazardous materials associated with existing fuel and glycol infrastructure, and water resources and stormwater management. Development of the EA required coordination with multiple departments within the HAS and consultant design teams to align project description and goals.
Additionally, our team completed an EA for the Terminal A expansion at IAH, which included close coordination with the Texas Historic Commission and other relevant stakeholders regarding the Section 106 process as it relates to potential impact to a decommissioned I.M. Pei airport traffic control tower.
