We are excited to share that Mead & Hunt was recently awarded an Engineering Excellence Honor Award from ACEC/MW for our work with JMT and the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) on the design of the Minnesota Avenue SE Multimodal Safety Project! This marks the third consecutive DDOT-Mead & Hunt-JMT collaboration to win an ACEC/MW Honor Award.
DDOT tasked our team with the design of a comprehensive project to address safety concerns for all roadway users on the 1.4-mile-long corridor of Minnesota Avenue SE that stretched from 27th Street SE to A Street SE in Washington, DC. Our design applied multiple innovative design strategies that advanced DDOT’s Vision Zero goals. Key design elements included installation of pedestrian refuge islands for safer crossings, enhancements to bus operations through bus bulb-outs and floating boarding islands, and the implementation of protected bike lanes. Additionally, significant modifications were made to two multi-leg intersections to reduce complexity and conflicts and to improve safety overall.
This award is a remarkable achievement and a testament to the team’s hard work and dedication. Congratulations to all involved!
