Mead & Hunt proudly shares that two of our firm’s projects received recognition from the American Council of Engineering Companies Wisconsin (ACEC WI) in the 2024 award season. The awards honor exceptional ideas and innovations in engineering.
Barn to Biogas: Powering a Cleaner World
Our waste-to-renewable-energy submission earned the distinction of ACEC WI’s 2024 Best of State Award. For this project, we developed a turnkey biogas system that generates renewable natural gas (RNG) from the manure of more than 10,000 cows.
One awards judge noted: “The Barn to Biogas project, which converts manure to RNG, is a stand-out design/construction project. The two 2.5-million-gallon digesters, biogas upgrade system, truck loading facility, and pipeline injection point provide clean energy for more than 1,600 vehicles per year—a notable project serving the Birnamwood area and beyond!”
Sustainability and the annual prevention of approximately 5,880 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions were contributing factors for this project’s undertaking by DTE Vantage in partnership with Matsche Farms in Birnamwood, WI. Mead & Hunt provided engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) services leveraging our innovative technology to convert manure to renewable energy on the 5,000-acre farm. The anaerobic digesters our team designed and installed to treat dairy manure positively impact the environment and agriculture.
Historic Lake Park Concrete Arch Bridge Rehabilitation
A second noteworthy project from our firm received the State Finalist Award. Collaborating with Olson & Nesvold Engineers, the Mead & Hunt team embarked on a preservation project for Milwaukee’s Lake Park 1906 historic concrete arch bridge. This local landmark is recognized on the National Register of Historic Places, however, the bridge required crucial rehabilitation.
The Mead & Hunt team preserved the bridge’s historic aesthetic through concrete repairs, surface coating selection, and color matching. The arch redesign also honors the original design. This rehabilitation secures the bridge’s legacy for at least another 50 years, allowing continued public access through the park and along the bluffs overlooking Lake Michigan.
Congratulations to all ACEC WI Engineering Excellence Award winners! Receiving recognition on ACEC WI’s prestigious award nomination list demonstrates the exceptional engineering and innovations unfolding in our industry and at Mead & Hunt. We look forward to developing more successful projects that support sustainability and preservation, as we continue to shape the future by putting people first.
