Grand River/Michigan Avenue Bus Rapid Transit Environmental Analysis

Environmental analysis for Lansing's BRT vision

Mead & Hunt led the environmental review and planning effort for a proposed 10-mile Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor connecting downtown Lansing, Michigan, with the growing community of Okemos. The $2 million project required evaluation of BRT alignments and station alternatives, analysis of transit and traffic operations, and compliance with National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) requirements. Stretching across four municipalities and the Michigan State University campus, extensive stakeholder coordination and public engagement was a necessity.

Working closely with the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), local governments, resource agencies, and Michigan State University, our project team helped guide the environmental review process. The team assessed existing and future transportation conditions, analyzed corridor performance, and developed alternatives that balanced mobility, accessibility, community priorities, and environmental considerations under NEPA. Additionally, a comprehensive public involvement program supported the project, including outreach to residents, businesses, institutions, and community leaders. Mead & Hunt facilitated productive dialogue and helped stakeholders understand project benefits and tradeoffs.

By combining expertise in transportation planning, environmental analysis, project management, and public engagement, our team provided the technical foundation and decision-making framework needed to advance a major regional transit investment while meeting regulatory requirements and client objectives.
