Oxnard Airport’s (OXR) Runway 7-25 needed to be reconstructed to meet growth needs. As this is the airport’s only runway supporting its nearly 110,000 operations a year, limiting the runway closure time was critical to the project’s success. Mead & Hunt designed clear plans and provided design support during construction, enabling an extremely expedited construction schedule of under three months. Our team also procured and incorporated community feedback and designed three alternatives that the County could implement depending on future funding. The project plans included multiple alternatives to allow the airport to continue to serve the community moving forward.
The 5,950-foot-long runway meets AC 150/5300-13A standards and Federal Aviation Administration requirements. The new full depth pavement includes lime treated subgrade, crushed aggregate base course and an asphalt concrete surface course. Old, abandoned lighting system foundations were removed and replaced with a new airfield electrical system that includes cable, edge lights, signage, and medium intensity approach lighting components. A new underdrain system was installed and connected to the airport’s existing storm drain facilities to extend the life of the pavement. The newly reconstructed runway joins existing taxiway connectors and will serve the airport for decades.
