A security system upgrade and replacement project transformed the obsolete Sedgwick County Adult Detention Facility, the largest jail in Kansas. The original door control systems were failing at this 30-year-old facility, with 468,000 square feet and 1,200 beds. The new system was needed to keep the jail functioning safely and operating up to 21st Century standards. An advanced digital system technology, consisting of 500 surveillance cameras and a video storage system, reduces operational liabilities. Previously, none of the cameras recorded video.
Mead & Hunt provided security electronics plus electrical and mechanical system design for the award-winning project. Specifications for the detention-grade electronic security system called for off-the-shelf and non-proprietary components. That way, the county can maintain the system or seek competitive bids in the future. The three-year project modernized the correctional facility with minimal disruption to daily operations and improved safety for inmates and staff.
