We’re excited to share that the US 14/South Avenue project has been recognized with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation’s (WisDOT) Excellence in Highway Construction Award for Concrete Paving.
We worked alongside Chippewa Concrete Services on the reconstruction of 1.12 miles of a four-lane urban roadway in the city of La Crosse. The scope of work included replacing the existing storm sewer, watermain, and sanitary sewer manholes, as well as demolishing buildings and clearing sites. Additionally, the team constructed three new multi-lane roundabouts, installed seven sign structures, installed monotube signal upgrades, added new street lighting, and laid concrete pavement. Work was also performed at an at-grade railroad crossing, requiring close coordination with the railroad as they completed a track replacement across the new roadway.

The project team faced challenges that arose due to the narrow project corridor as it is adjacent to over 50 residential parcels and 30 business parcels. A large portion of the roadway was constructed within the existing 66-foot right-of-way with the use of temporary limited easement during construction. An additional challenge during construction was the need for bi-directional traffic to be maintained, while still providing access to residences and businesses. The team broke the project into stages and utilized nightly and weekend closures to minimize impact on the community and complete the project in a timely manner.
Receiving this award is a testament to the team’s hard work and dedication. Congratulations to all involved!
