An area of Charleston, West Virginia that was once bypassed by local foot traffic is now drawing the attention of locals and travelers as they pass through the revitalized Slack Plaza. When the city began construction on the Slack Plaza renovations, they selected Mead & Hunt to provide construction management and inspection services.
Construction of the new plaza was important to the city and consisted of demolishing the existing plaza, as well as site preparation and construction of a new plaza, including drainage, utilities, walkways, walls, an entertainment stage, ADA restroom facilities, and landscaping. Construction management included conducting the preconstruction meetings; reviewing the contractor’s application for payments; submitting final as-builts; claims management; maintaining project records; managing RFIs; change orders and submittals; conducting progress meetings; and keeping the owner informed of scope, budget, and schedule. Construction inspection included monitoring and reporting daily activities and progress, verifying conformance with plans and specifications, materials testing, documenting final inspection, and creating a final punchlist for final compliance.
Charleston’s Slack Plaza area is now a cultural hub within the city that provides a space for festivals, activities, and pedestrians to utilize throughout the year.
