The new consolidated rental car facility at Roanoke Regional Airport (ROA) provides better visibility, branding, and functionality for the rental car agencies, while providing improved passenger experience by co-locating the rental counters adjacent to the new ready-return parking lot. The 6,800-SF facility was constructed with exposed steel frame, terrazzo flooring, brick veneer, and aluminum composite panels, providing long-term durability and a thermally efficient envelope. The design included a high-performance, full-height glass curtainwall, providing enhanced views and plenty of natural daylighting.
The journey from terminal to carpark was difficult for passengers, especially with baggage and bad weather, due to an uncovered and uneven sidewalk. Our team designed a new, wider sidewalk to enhance passenger safety and covered the sidewalk with a steel canopy structure which functions as an extension of the terminal.
The canopy is open air, but a system of transparent walls with digital ceramic ink images of the Blue Ridge Mountains pays homage to the surrounding natural area. The design of the rental car building and walkway system blend with the aesthetic of the terminal building while establishing a fresh and updated appearance.
