The City of Oconomowoc’s sidewalk replacement program management system was outdated and cumbersome and needed to be replaced. The city wanted to bring its data into a spatial environment to track sidewalk repairs with pinpoint accuracy. Our team collected each square foot of sidewalk pad size and location using a backpack-mounted R2 GPS unit connected to the Esri Quick Capture app.
Combining these tools increased the speed of collection and included collection in areas that could not be digitally updated from the city’s administration office. This also allowed the city to determine which sidewalks would be impacted during the replacement progress. The Esri Quick Capture app allowed us to generate unique symbology for different sidewalk sizes and classifications, while seamlessly integrating the capture of a point. This GIS application increased the sidewalk replacement program’s efficiency from collecting 2,000 to upwards of 8,000 points of reference per day—a four-fold improvement and immediate return on investment for the city.
