Kodiak Airport (ADQ) supports air carrier services for the City of Kodiak and serves as a regional hub for several outlying communities. Three of the Airport’s six runway ends did not meet standard safety area criteria. Mead & Hunt is worked closely with the FAA to complete an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Airport. This project included detailed alternative analysis as well as intense coordination with the Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Land Management, Coast Guard, State Historic Preservation Office and local tribes. The project included impact assessment and mitigation development for fill placed into the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge, Section 4(f) impacts, subsistence and environmental justice impacts, as well as complex land ownership issues.
The NEPA process for this EIS led to enhanced aviation safety, minimized harm to the environment, and avoided direct impacts to sensitive natural resources.
