In partnership with Gerald R. Ford International Airport (GRR), Mead & Hunt developed a comprehensive sustainability study and management plan (SMP) to guide long-term environmental and social responsibility efforts at the airport.
The plan began with a thorough inventory of existing sustainability programs, initiatives, and conditions to establish a baseline across key sustainability categories. From there, a framework was built to set measurable goals, identify impactful initiatives, and implement strategies that drive real change. A dedicated sustainability committee, comprised of airport staff and local stakeholders, played a pivotal role in shaping the plan through robust engagement.
Beyond defining a sustainability framework, the SMP included forward-thinking components like a waste management and recycling plan, Airport Carbon Accreditation (Level 2), a solar feasibility study, and an electric vehicle assessment. Mead & Hunt also explored funding strategies, social equity, and climate vulnerability. For transparency and community connection, the team developed an interactive StoryMap to showcase progress and share accomplishments. To facilitate implementation, the plan includes timelines and champions associated with each sustainability initiative.
