We’re excited to share that the GRB1012 Taxiway and Apron Rehab project with Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport (GRB) was recognized as a Reliever & General Aviation Airports category Gold Winner for Excellence in Concrete Pavement by the American Concrete Pavement Association (ACPA) at their 35th Annual Excellence in Concrete Pavement Awards. This award recognizes outstanding design and construction achievements for exceptional quality, hard work, and innovative problem-solving. Mead & Hunt provided the design and construction administration services on this project with Vinton Construction Company as the prime contractor.
GRB was experiencing rapid pavement deterioration on portions of the Air Carrier Apron and Taxiway D pavement areas. These locations were beyond their useful life and creating foreign object debris, or FOD, which created safety concerns on the airfield. The varying depths of the numerous underlying pavement sections posed significant challenges for removal and rehabilitation. Despite these obstacles, the project team utilized innovative techniques and meticulous planning to ensure smooth execution of the rehabilitation work.
Additionally, to help minimize the effects of construction, the project was phased to close a maximum of two taxiways at a time to maintain aircraft access to the terminal. Even with the phasing, construction traffic still had to navigate amongst the taxiing aircraft. Construction vehicles passed through active aircraft operation areas over 12,000 times throughout the duration of the project, and not a single incident or incursion occurred. Additionally, flights did not suffer any delays due to the construction and the project finished almost two weeks ahead of schedule.
Receiving this national award from the ACPA is a testament to the hard work and dedication put forth by the whole project team. Congratulations to all involved!
This project was also recognized in early 2024 as the Wisconsin Bureau of Aeronautics’ 2023 Outstanding Airport Construction Project.
