While airports serve as gateways for travel, they’re also powerful economic engines.
To quantify airports’ contribution to the economy, Mead & Hunt’s Eric Laing developed an in-depth report for Airport Council International – North America: The Economic Impact of U.S. Commercial Service Airports in 2024. This impact study measures the economic benefits generated by U.S. commercial service airports.
Why does this matter? From terminal staff to maintenance crews to the thousands of businesses inside and around airports, these facilities support families across America, providing 12.8 million jobs, generating a $619 billion annual payroll, and producing $1.8 trillion in annual output.
With passenger traffic expected to reach 1.4 billion by 2040, the $173.9 billion infrastructure investment identified in a companion study will allow these economic benefits to continue growing alongside demand.
Eric’s report shows that beyond connecting flights, airports connect people to prosperity.
