Mead & Hunt supported planning, traffic engineering, and design services for Phases I and II of the Dulles Metrorail Silver Line, a major transit investment that connects the Washington, D.C., region to Washington Dulles International Airport and supports future transit-oriented development throughout the corridor. The team provided traffic operations analysis, station access planning, construction staging support, utility coordination, and transportation management services for multiple stations in Fairfax and Loudoun counties.
During Phase I, Mead & Hunt supported final design and construction planning by analyzing traffic operations throughout the corridor and developing strategies to maintain mobility during construction. The team conducted traffic data collection, travel time and queue analyses, maintenance of traffic evaluations, and traffic signal design to support roadway closures, detours, lane shifts, and construction sequencing. Close coordination with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and local jurisdictions helped minimize impacts on roadway users while advancing project delivery.
For Phase II, Mead & Hunt led station area access and parking studies for the Herndon, Innovation, and Route 772 stations, evaluating vehicle, pedestrian, bicycle, bus, and kiss-and-ride access. This included traffic forecasting, parking and circulation analysis, pedestrian and bicycle improvements, lighting design, utility relocation design, and preparation of a transportation management plan. The team also inventoried more than 1,000 traveler information signs across 30 stations and developed updated signage concepts that supported the Silver Line extension and future development.
