Over a five-year, multi-phase program, Mead & Hunt partnered with the Wayne County Airport Authority (WCAA) to transform Willow Run Airport’s (YIP) airfield geometry, safety, and operational efficiency. The program eliminated a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)-designated runway hot spot, reconstructed the crosswind runway, and delivered YIP’s first full-length parallel taxiway to the airport’s primary runway. These improvements modernized and right-sized infrastructure to support continued cargo and general aviation (GA) activity.
This program has fundamentally improved safety, efficiency, and sustainability. Strategic phasing allowed improvements to be delivered without disrupting operations while setting the foundation for long-term growth, making this project a transformative investment in the airport’s future.
The program represents a coordinated, funding-driven implementation of improvements that addressed immediate safety risks while enabling long-term operational flexibility.
