Project safety during airfield construction projects is vital; safety should always be at the forefront of what we do. How can aviation professionals work to implement project safety measures? To answer this question, I and three other airport operator colleagues, Christopher Bostwick, Theresa Samosiuk, and Michael Stephens, are participating in a webinar through ACC to discuss how we have implemented project safety measures, and lessons learned from recent construction projects. The webinar brings together a three different airports of differing sizes and regions to get a broader view of this issue.
We will be focusing on how the content of Advisory Circular (AC) 150/5370-2G affects the construction of airfield projects, including conformance with Construction Safety Phasing Plans and Safety Phasing Compliance Documents. It is aimed at engineering professionals and airport operators, as they are the ones responsible for enforcing the implementation of safety regulations out in the field, and these measures also greatly affect the operations of airport operators and directly impacts the safety of everyone that operates on the airfield.
The webinar will also cover airport operator-specific examples of safety measures, communication and coordination protocols, phase change considerations, and the ramifications of not complying with them. We will also discuss roles and responsibilities of various team members and agencies. Learning objectives will help participants:
- Identify who is responsible for safety and safety implementation.
- Understand the difference between a Construction Safety and Phasing Plan (CSPP) and Safety Plan Compliance Document (SPCD) and who is responsible for each.
- Summarize the different traffic control measures are used for project safety.
- Understand how to handle proposed changes.
