Summit Bechtel Reserve 2
Summit Bechtel Reserve

The Summit Bechtel Reserve

  • CLIENT: Boy Scouts of America (BSA)
  • LOCATION: Fayette County, WV

Roadway design for pinnacle of Scouting experience

Located in the wilds of West Virginia, The Summit provides an area for training, Scouting, and adventuring, not only for the BSA, but for all outdoor enthusiasts. The Summit Bechtel Reserve (SBR) is also home to the National Scout Jamboree and the Paul R. Christen National High Adventure Base. With incredible facilities and amazing outdoor programs, The Summit is more than simply a facility for Scouts; it is a place that pushes future leaders to new heights.

In 2009, the BSA announced that it had chosen the West Virginia site as the future home of The Summit. After a very competitive procurement, Mead & Hunt was selected to be the transportation consultant for the project. Our team designed over 15 miles of new two-lane roads in mountainous terrain and laid out over 17 miles of pedestrian trails that were primarily built by Boy Scouts. We also designed 10 stealth telecommunication towers to provide cell service across the Summit Bechtel Reserve, along with the two public entrances into the SBR for the West Virginia Division of Highways.
