Fast-track military runway reconstruction saves $3M

At 12,000 feet long, runway 13C/31C is one of the busiest airfields in the Air Force and is essential to the Columbus Air Force Base mission. The deteriorating condition of the runway required continuous and costly maintenance, and posed safety risks to aircraft and personnel. Our aviation team designed and oversaw this primary runway reconstruction. All construction was phased for 24/7 construction to reduce runway downtime. With the fast-track design schedule, the runway to reopened after only six months.

Our engineering team designed the runway to precise specifications for safely conducting military operations and within strict cost limitations. Our airfield engineers assessed 12 different pavement options to help minimize costs, gaining a $3 million savings with the chosen alternative. The selected design included the replacement of the existing pavement section and underdrain system, placement of a new drainage layer, and the placement of a new asphalt section.
