Insufficient capacity and unsafe entrance and exit ramps caused travel challenges through the existing Park Street Interchange, prompting the Wisconsin Department of Transportation to seek a modified design. Our team improved upon the original interchange design and modified a conceptual design to eliminate weaving problems, construct a distributor roadway, construct auxiliary lanes and create a new signalized exit ramp terminal intersection.
The design team gained NEPA compliance as well as concurrence from the city of Madison on the project scope and aesthetics while navigating an expedited design schedule. As the project design engineer, we assessed anticipated traffic operations during construction using Synchro, Highway Capacity Software and Paramics. Our team succeeded in delivering a safer, more accommodating interchange.
