Susquehanna River Rail Bridge Cultural Resource Studies

  • CLIENT: Amtrak & HNTB
  • LOCATION: Harford County, MD; Cecil County, MD

Analysis and preservation of cultural resources in Maryland

Mead & Hunt is providing cultural resource investigations and environmental compliance support for the replacement of the Susquehanna River Rail Bridge between Havre de Grace and Perryville, Maryland. Working under a Programmatic Agreement and in coordination with federal, state, and local agencies, the team is leading Section 106 and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) compliance efforts for one of the region’s most significant rail infrastructure projects. Services include cultural resource evaluations, agency coordination, impact assessments, mitigation planning, and public engagement.

The team has completed extensive archaeological and historic resource studies, including all phases of archaeological investigations, architectural surveys, National Register eligibility evaluations, archival research, Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) and Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) documentation, GIS analysis, building relocation planning, construction protection plans, and material salvage plans. The resources evaluated span Native American sites, colonial-era settlements, Revolutionary War features, historic transportation corridors, and twentieth-century urban development.

Mead & Hunt has coordinated closely with the Federal Railroad Administration, Amtrak, Maryland Historical Trust, Maryland Department of Transportation, National Park Service, local governments, and consulting parties to evaluate project effects and develop mitigation strategies. Ongoing efforts include stakeholder engagement, preparing interpretive materials, public presentations, and preservation planning to help advance project delivery while protecting significant cultural resources.
