The Natomas Levee Improvement Program (NLIP) is one of the largest flood control projects in the United States. It protects 80,000 people and $70 billion in infrastructure, and is expected to gain 200-year flood protection. As part of NLIP, Mead & Hunt is responsible for preparing over 800 plan sheets, technical specifications, and bid documents for the projects, and acted as the owner’s representative during construction. Mead & Hunt led the design of modifications at the privately-owned South Lauppe river pump on the east levee of the Sacramento River. To accommodate the levee improvements, our team’s design raised the pipes crossing the levee to above the 200-year water surface elevation and upgraded the pump and supporting structure to handle the additional head.
