South Bend International Airport (SBN) needed a new International Arrivals Terminal (IAT) to accommodate significant growth. Mead & Hunt provided planning, design and construction administration for the project, which included a Federal Inspection Station (FIS) and general aviation facility (GAF) with an elevated pedestrian walkway and a relocated passenger boarding bridge. The FIS portion of the project consists of the renovation and remodel of unoccupied space in the existing passenger terminal. A new inbound baggage room addition was constructed adjacent to the FIS remodel. The FIS will clear commercial aviation traffic and a new elevated walkway will allow passengers to travel from Gate A9 to the new FIS in a controlled environment, which makes for a more pleasant passenger experience. A ramp was incorporated into the elevated walkway at each end, as well as a preliminary hold room and emergency exiting as required by code. The new terminal is set to meet the airport’s needs for years to come.
