One of the largest networks of landfills in the USA had a corporate initiative to provide 100% renewable electricity for use in local communities. To realize this goal, it sought assistance converting the landfill from a gas flaring operation to a landfill gas-to-energy facility. We managed the construction of this state-of-the-art plant, from bidding services for trade subcontractor selection to management of the process piping, concrete, earthwork, fire protection, and electrical. Installation of pretreatment system components included the gas conditioning system, compressed air system, two reciprocating engines, radiator, aftercooler, HVAC system, as well as above and below-ground stainless steel gas piping, HDPE gas piping, and condensate piping. An extensive controls system connects the equipment that compresses, cools, and filters the methane gas. The processed gas is piped to two engines, which generate electricity around the clock. The emissions system includes scrubbers that remove carbon monoxide, sulfur oxides, and nitrogen oxide, making it one of the lowest emissions landfill gas-to-energy plants in the USA.
