Mead & Hunt has worked with Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport (BHM) staff providing on-call air service consulting to support the airport’s efforts to expand and strengthen its airline service. Our team attended industry conferences, prepared leakage studies and airline meeting presentations, and worked with airport staff to model ultra-low-cost carrier operations as part of new carrier recruitment efforts. These efforts also included identifying prospective carriers and new market opportunities to boost airline service to underserved areas.
Mead & Hunt prepared an airline presentation and business case, highlighting the opportunities at BHM, and the team identified underserved markets to Breeze Airways. After Spirit Airlines left the BHM market, Breeze Airways began nonstop flights to Fort Lauderdale, restoring service to a former Spirit Airlines market, and Raleigh-Durham, a market previously identified as underserved.
BHM’s recent momentum is highlighted by service expansions from not only Breeze Airways but also Southwest Airlines, which recently launched service to Nashville and Phoenix. Throughout these milestones, Mead & Hunt has been deeply integrated in every phase of BHM’s air service development strategy, from identifying opportunities through airline outreach and recruitment. These efforts have helped drive capacity beyond pre-pandemic benchmarks.
