Waste-to-Energy RNG Digester Facility with Solar Microgrid

New Treatment System Reduces 11,000+ Tons of Emissions

EnTech Solutions, a leader in renewable energy and sustainable fuels, needed to upgrade an existing waste-to-energy anaerobic digester to convert dairy cattle manure into methane and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. They sought engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) services to provide a new membrane treatment system to convert methane to renewable natural gas (RNG).

In collaboration with Faith Technologies, Mead & Hunt designed and constructed a new membrane treatment system to process biogas from three anaerobic manure digesters fed by more than 4,000 cows. The treatment system consists of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) scrubbing and membrane treatment for removal of carbon dioxide (CO2) to create RNG. Solar panels (2.8MW) and a microgrid were added to the facility to optimize RNG production at the site and reduce the fuel’s carbon intensity score. Up to 295 SCFM of RNG is loaded into tube trailers for transport to the pipeline interconnect point, which is located at the Dane County Sanitary Landfill, approximately 20 miles away. The facility also benefits the regional ecosystem by using advanced filtration technology to remove phosphorus from the digestate and ultimately the watershed.
