Mead & Hunt has received ACEC-Ohio’s Outstanding Achievement Award for our work resolving a growing conflict between the CSX Railroad and a large, intermodal center located on State Route (SR) 309 in Marion County, Ohio. The railroad crossed SR 309 at-grade, causing trains to delay traffic, and separating residents and businesses from fire, police and emergency services. Mead & Hunt provided preliminary engineering and final design services for this important project.
3D modeling technology was instrumental to achieve all project goals. This project was one of the first in Ohio to use 3D modeling technology for maintenance of traffic planning. In the end, the project construction cost was reduced by $3.2 million, and $1.5 million in utility relocation. This represents a reduction of almost 33% from the project’s preliminary design estimated construction cost of $9.8 million.
In addition, Mead & Hunt worked closely with ODOT, the local community, and project stakeholders to develop the feasibility study. This was done to foster community buy-in and provide the most effective solution for the unique needs of the local community. ODOT listened to the public to choose the most effective option—a grade separation with slight realignment.
Ultimately, through the use of multiple innovative techniques including 3D modeling, we were able to meet all project goals on time and save the client millions of dollars in the process. The knowledge gained on how to use 3D modeling technology to elevate transportation projects is invaluable and will be of tremendous benefit to both our own clients, and the industry as a whole.
