Accountability and community stakeholder outreach play a critical role in project planning. For most of the industry, the extent of any environmental justice consideration is following regulatory guidelines such as the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), state environmental policy, or Department of Transportation (DOT) guidelines. However, prioritizing the health and safety of community members will lead to the most successful project design. This session will explore available resources as well as actions that participants can take to plan and design projects with environmental justice considerations, such as resource allocation, engagement accountability, community and stakeholder outreach, and inclusive project life cycle management. Regulations and funding opportunities that advance and support environmental protections in federal project work will also be discussed.
