In light of the current pandemic, our clients and communities continue to rely on us for essential infrastructure services. SCDOT is a prime example. As we continue to work on critical mission items with SCDOT, such as the roads and bridge program, the health and safety of everyone involved remains a top priority.
I recently worked with ACEC-SC together with SCDOT and other industry partners to create the “Joint Workforce Safety Plan.” South Carolina is the first state to create a joint safety plan, and ACEC National posted it on their website for others to use.
According to the plan, all staff are continuing to follow CDC guidelines and are encouraged to communicate by phone, video conference or email when possible. Several additional precautions are also outlined to maintain health on jobsites, such as:
- Any workplace areas should be cleaned frequently with disinfectants. This includes vehicles. Jobsite offices/trailers should be cleaned at minimum twice per day.
- Eye protection and gloves should be worn at all times, even if not required for the job itself.
- The number of visitors to the jobsite should be restricted as much as possible. If visitors must be on site, they should be screened for risk factors outlined by the CDC via telephone or email prior to their visit.
- Everyone should avoid using shared equipment. This includes vehicles, iPads, pens, or PPE. If a piece of equipment must be shared, it must be sanitized between uses. Additionally, nobody should drink from communal coolers or drink stations.
- A six-foot distance should be maintained between all people, even at mealtimes.
As we navigate the coming weeks and months, putting people first and working together to maintain the health and safety of our clients, employees, and community will be critical. The fact that all parties were able to come together quickly and effectively during this time of crisis speaks to the strength and resiliency of our industry.
