New pump station improves runoff water quality

The Portland Air National Guard operates under a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System Permit to protect water quality. When runoff from a subbasin was failing to meet requirements, our environmental and water resources engineers planned and designed possible solutions to this challenge, studied the area hydrology and completed hydraulic analyses to aid in narrowing the alternatives.

The final design consisted of a new pump station that will discharge water to an infiltration-detention basin to remove the pollutants from the water, reducing runoff volume and better handling peak flows. Our team used SWMM, a dynamic precipitation runoff simulation model during analysis to design for the best performance of the system and for reduced maintenance. Critical coordination with the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, PANG and Port of Portland achieved a cost-effective solution that could be successfully implemented and permitted.
