This national dairy product manufacturer launched a greenfield production facility and needed to have its wastewater meet stringent permit requirements while prioritizing footprint reduction, flexible treatment process options, and energy-efficient operation. Our team designed the new treatment system to meet stringent permit limits. The system included flow equalization with automatic high-strength waste diversion, a dissolved air flotation system, aerobic with fixed-film tertiary filtration, UV disinfection, and post-aeration. Solids are treated in an anaerobic digester. Due to an accelerated project schedule, this project was completed using a hybrid design-build technique to allow the manufacturer to maintain competitive construction bidding while realizing the benefits of accelerated design and construction schedules. The treatment plant is capable of meeting stringent effluent permit limits for direct river discharge. The biogas produced by the anaerobic process is used to generate electricity with an internal combustion engine.
