Diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) have become increasingly hot topics over the past few years. However, these topics are not a fleeting trend; DEIB plays a critical role in creating a successful workforce. We at Mead & Hunt have seen this firsthand and strongly advocate for addressing the ways that we can apply DEIB principles to our internal and external operations. It is important to provide education, remove barriers, support growth, and supply opportunities to showcase our level of care for all of our stakeholders.
In 2018, Mead & Hunt formed an Employee Resource Group to address DEIB within the company and our industry. Over the past few years, the group has accomplished many goals within the company, including expanding its resources with the addition of two Program Managers in 2021. Over the next few months, we’re excited to explore topics related to the ERG’s five interest groups (Disabilities, Ethnic Minorities, LGBTQ+, Veterans/Military, and Women), but first let’s remind ourselves about what DEIB means and why it’s a priority for Mead & Hunt.
What does diversity mean to Mead & Hunt?
When we talk about diversity, we are referring to the visible and invisible qualities and experiences that make each of us unique. Diversity is not limited to gender, race, or sexual orientation, but includes age, ability, religion, socioeconomic background, military experience, and more.
Why does DEIB matter?
A diverse and inclusive workplace is respectful of everyone’s differences and allows all employees to feel comfortable bringing their authentic selves to work. When an employee hides aspects of themselves during the workday their job performance, confidence, motivation, desire to progress, and psychological safety may all be negatively affected. An inclusive environment that encourages employees to be themselves improves employee communication and engagement. This has a positive impact on our business by:
- Decreasing groupthink and increasing productivity, innovation, and creativity, which makes us more profitable and allows us to better serve our clients and communities
- Improving retention by showing employees that their unique talents and perspectives are respected and appreciated, which makes them want to stay
- Making us more competitive in the recruitment of a workforce that increasingly values a commitment to diversity in the workplace
This short list only begins to explain why DEIB is important to our operations at Mead & Hunt. And these benefits are not unique to our firm—studies consistently show that companies with more diversity see better business outcomes as a whole.
As a company that boldly proclaims to take care of people, do the right thing, and do what makes sense, it is only logical that DEIB be firmly ingrained in our culture. We strive to meet people where they’re at since we all have different experiences and are always learning. We hope that you’ll join us over the next few months as we delve deeper into topics related to each ERG interest group, starting with the disabilities group.
