Twelve design-build bridge replacements beat schedule and cost

The Virginia Department of Transportation had several bridges on their future project list eligible when a special federal allocation unexpectedly became available. Through a design-build contract, our transportation engineers provided design services for the rehabilitation of the 12 bridges, which were either structurally deficient or functionally obsolete.

We designed new bridge superstructures, ranging from 20 to 213 feet long. Our engineering team also assisted with survey and utility coordination and road design. We drew on our environmental experience and regulatory knowledge to complete the necessary environmental investigations. Our project managers also provided quality control construction inspection. We helped VDOT reduce costs by providing multiple value engineering options. These cost savings and our teams’ progress resulted in the addition of the 12th bridge to the project, which — like the others — was completed ahead of schedule and within budget.
