As the University Park Airport did not have a traffic control tower, the airport commissioned Mead & Hunt with designing and constructing an 82-foot high structure to hold a large amount of utilities and communication equipment. Our team used highly effective BIM 3D modeling techniques to resolve potential conflicts. Our design was qualified to enter the non-federal Contract Tower program sponsored by the Federal Aviation Administration.
We worked with the sponsor, the Federal Aviation Administration, airlines and Congressional representatives to secure project funding. The tower has an adjacent single level facility that houses the building mechanical and electrical support equipment and airspace, air traffic control tower electronics equipment.
