Safety paramount in new walkway
The existing sidewalk at Roanoke Regional Airport was uncovered and uneven in some areas. This made the journey from terminal to carpark difficult for passengers, especially with baggage and bad weather. Our team designed a new, wider sidewalk to enhance passenger safety. We covered the sidewalk with a steel canopy structure, which functions as an extension of the terminal.
The canopy is open air, but a system of transparent walls with digital ceramic ink images of the Blue Ridge Mountains pays homage to the surrounding natural area. In addition, the total length of the new canopy and sidewalk system is around 460 feet. We used a polycarbonate roof system and exposed structural steel for the structure.
