Munising’s outdated wastewater collection and treatment system experienced excessive flows to the 0.9‑MGD activated sludge facility. Our wastewater treatment engineers worked with our client to prepare a preliminary engineering report and provide design services and construction management and inspection. The successful funding application to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development garnered a mix of grants and loans to cover the project cost.
The project cost effectively used as much of the existing wastewater treatment facility as possible, while replacing and adding critical components. New aeration equipment and controls reduce energy costs. The head works, electrical distribution system, and SCADA systems were replaced. Replacement of the chlorine disinfection system with ultraviolet disinfection improves safety and eliminates discharge of chlorination byproducts in the facility’s effluent.
