Complex environmental analysis completed in Alaska
Kodiak Airport, about four miles southwest of downtown Kodiak, provides commercial air service for Kodiak, a regional hub for surrounding communities, and a U.S. Coast Guard aviation operations facility. Presently three of the airport’s six runway ends do not meet standard safety area criteria. Our team completed an Environmental Impact Statement for the improvements to the safety areas, including a detailed alternative analysis. We coordinated with agencies such as Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Land Management, Coast Guard and local tribes. Our analysis identified possible Section 4(f) impacts to state recreation, complex land ownership issues, and potential impacts on multiple sensitive, threatened and endangered species. Our experience delivering high-quality environmental impact assessments helped us successfully overcome these complex challenges.
