The outdated equipment at the city water treatment plant was stretching its potable water supply capacity. Our municipal infrastructure leaders designed the new facility for greater reliability and energy efficiency while reducing costs and making operations easier. The team recognized existing site reuse was most economical, but had to overcome the challenge of a confined site due to its location in a residential neighborhood. Water supply had to continue throughout the 24-month construction period, and it did. Despite the limited site size, the new structure allows for future expansion to meet increasing demand within the same footprint.
Our engineers planned construction stages to overcome several of these challenges. A complex combination of pretreatment of water onsite, which required 20-foot-deep footings, and a 24-hour dewatering system that ran for six months effectively counteracted the site’s low water table. Our work with this client has allowed them to continue their 135-year legacy of producing high quality potable water.
