Innovating with toothpicks and playing cards

innovationWell, we had us some fun last week!

In celebration of World Creativity and Innovation Week, Mead & Hunt’s own Innovation Group unleashed a challenge upon employees: Show us what you can make out of a random collection of office supplies, toys and other items – and you have one hour to do it.

Our group sent 28 boxes to office locations across the company. Every box contained the same items – things like toothpicks, Play-Doh, playing cards, paper clips, plastic wheels, rubber bands, straws and more. We asked employees to form teams; they waited til their lunch hour to open and reveal what they had the next hour to work with.

The creations were inspiring! Some revealed office culture or location – sled dogs racers from our Upper Peninsula, Michigan, crew and a tornado scene from our Tulsa, Oklahoma, folks – while others showcased parts of our client work, such as airport runways, infrastructure, bridges and the like. Creations even included a party bus and a Play-Doh thrower!

Winning entries were posted on our company intranet for voting. First place was a model of the Mackinac Bridge; second was a tower crane from Fargo; third was a battleship from our Portland friends (USS Portlandia!).

Congrats to our winning entries – but most of all, congrats on the teamwork, creativity and inspiration that makes this activity a true win!
